Spring Cleaning with SilverGuard

It is definitely starting to feel like Spring is in the air. Days are feeling brighter and dare I say warmer. With Spring comes the popular annual tradition of a big Spring clean – something that allows us to refresh and organise our homes for the year ahead. It is definitely a good time to consider how your home layout, organisation and storage is working. While for some people this is wholly welcome, for others it can feel like a daunting and overwhelming task and we should all remember that the idea of a Spring Clean can be as much or as little as you want.

Spring cleaning is definitely not an all or nothing. It is up to you where and what you would like to tackle – even the smallest clean and tidy can have a huge impact. Follow our guide to help get you started on your Spring cleaning journey this year!

  • Make a Plan : break your spring clean down into smaller more manageable tasks and take it step-by-step. Decide on a room or even just an area to tackle at one time, and if you find this daunting you could start really small with something like the cutlery drawer. Don’t expect to do it all in one go and listen some music or a podcast to keep you company when you are doing your spring clean

  • Declutter, Dust, Clean and Refresh : use this mantra when you tackle a new room or area

    • Declutter: have a look at everything and let go of the things you don’t need and organise what is left behind. Bag up any unwanted items for charity or to sell, sort items for recycling and items just for the bin
    • Dust: dusting is one of those things that is often left out of daily cleaning. And it is worth remembering that dust can build up in your home, which can bring on allergies. Post your decluttering, now is the perfect time to dust
    • Clean: a deep clean is more thorough than regular cleaning and includes cleaning areas that are often overlooked – perfect for a Spring Clean!
    • Refresh: now that you have decluttered, dusted and cleaned it may be time for a refresh. Spring is a great time to welcome the new season with new bed linen and towels, or you might have your eye on something else that would great in your home

  • Work from the top down : this is particularly true when it comes to dusting and cleaning. Remember that dust falls so to save yourself from doing twice the amount of cleaning, start with things on the wall like mirrors and picture frames before you dust and clean under them

  • Areas and rooms to approach :

    • Kitchen: clean appliances such as the oven, microwave and dishwasher, inside and out; empty cupboards and throw away any old or expired food items and donate in-date items you won’t use; wipe down the inside of cupboards before reorganising them; empty, defrost and clean the fridge and freezer
    • Bedroom: vacuum your bed and mattress, spot cleaning or using fabric shampoo if needed; rotate and flip your mattress; wash all bedding; organise clothes and shoes in your wardrobe, organising items to keep, throw away and donate
    • Bathroom: clean showerheads and taps; clean all surfaces, making sure to tackle any problem areas; organise toiletries and cosmetics, throwing away old or expired products
    • Living Room: pull out sofas and larger furniture items to clean underneath and behind them; wash blankets, throws and cushion covers; clean sofas and soft furnishings as needed
    • Outside Spaces (gardens, terraces, balconies etc)
    • The Other Bits (airing cupboard, junk drawers, garage, loft etc)
